Dance classes for every skill level, designed for adults.
Already have some tap experience, or coming back from a break?
Whether you’ve danced for 1 year or 20, you’ll find a class to suit.
You're ready to get back on the dance floor...
But perhaps there’s a niggling voice in your head, saying:
“You’ve left it too long”
“You’ve lost your rhythm”
“You’re not fit enough and won’t keep up in an experienced class”
Getting started again often feels like one of the hardest steps.
But within just a few classes, most students say the same thing: it comes back quicker than they thought, and they’re having way more fun than they expected.
Learn technique, rhythm, choreo and improv alongside dancers aged 20 to 80
At our adult-focused studio (no children’s classes are offered), you’ll learn to create music with your feet.
These classes aren’t about simply copying and repeating footwork. The teaching method is tailored to adult learning styles, every technique is broken down, explained, practised in isolation, then in context, and applied in ways that allow you to progress steadily and with real understanding.
All while sharpening your coordination and memory, building fitness without the gym, making new friends and growing your confidence.

Meet your teacher (and hype woman), Megan
I started learning tap dance as an adult beginner in Melbourne some 30 years ago, and I haven’t stopped teaching since.
I’ve trained in New York with world-renowned tap dance artists, and continue my professional learning through ongoing classes and online study. I’ve also taught at leading institutions including the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and the National Theatre Ballet School, and have choreographed for film, TV and major events.
My unique approach is designed to get the best out of adults returning to dance and is deeply rooted in authentic tap dance technique, musicality and the rich history and culture of the art form.
Whatever level you’re at, I’ll challenge you to keep moving forward, to create music with your feet, and have the skill and confidence to take your place in the rhythm.
Book your class
Choose a single class or a 10-week pack; either is fine. Classes are a progressive course of learning, so you’ll get the most out of it by coming regularly, say once or twice a week.
Turn up and tap
Pull on your tap shoes and join a class of enthusiastic adult dancers. Expect a fun and energetic hour, with plenty of time to have a go, sharpen your technique and progress. With feedback from an experienced teacher, at a pace that suits you.
Gain new skills and fitness
Muscle memory kicks in much faster than you think. Soon, you’ll be moving with confidence, getting your heart rate up and mastering steps that once felt impossible.
How it works.
These classes are for you if:
You’re coming back to dance after a break, even a really long one, a current student hadn’t tapped for 50 years when she returned to the studio.
You have some previous dance experience (at least 12 months), and you're ready to use it again.
You love the idea of getting fit without it feeling like exercise.
You want to stretch your mind in a class so busy with rhythm and footwork that you barely think of anything else.
You prefer an adult-only dance space where learning is tailored for grown-up brains.
You want someone looking out for you, past injuries and all, at a pace that suits your body (including being challenged when you need it).
You’d love the chance to perform. Our optional end-of-year showcase is one of the best days of the year.
They may not be the right fit if:
You’re a beginner with little to no experience — try the Beginner classes instead.
You’re looking for a class for your child (this is an adults-only studio.
You’re only interested in trick steps and flashy moves, we focus on technique and variations that help you become a better dancer over time.
You can’t make it to a weeknight evening or Saturday daytime class (that’s when all classes are scheduled).
Where to find us
225 Swan Street, Richmond Melbourne

-
Tap shoes are available for hire by speaking directly to The Dance Factory reception team (the studio’s front desk). Not all sizes are available, and if you’re planning to hire shoes, you will need to arrive 15 minutes before your class.
-
Once our classes start for the year they just keep going through until early December, we don’t stop for school holidays. The exception to this is our beginner short course which runs for 6 weeks.
-
You can, but because the classes work as a progressive course of learning we add to the repertoire and routines each week. You’ll have a better experience if you can attend on a regular basis, one a week is fine, twice a week is even better
-

Classes are taught at a pace that works for your body, in a way that builds your fitness, technique and skills gradually and progressively. This gives you space to alter steps if they don’t work for your body.
-
Tap dance requires very different technique and rhythm to other dance styles such as ballet and jazz. Most people in this situation start in beginners, even if they have years of previous dance experience in another style. You'll likely move through the early levels faster than an absolute beginner, but the technique and footwork in tap dance take their own time to learn.
