Meet Megan‍ ‍

Your tap teacher, hype woman, and the one cheering you on when you think you’re not getting it.

I didn’t grow up dancing. I started as an adult beginner, so I know exactly what it feels like to walk into class thinking, “everyone else knows what they’re doing.”

My job isn’t to turn you into a pro dancer.
It’s to help you feel comfortable enough to keep going.

No pressure.
No being put on the spot.
No one watching you mess it up.

Just a room where everyone’s figuring it out together.

If you’ve been hovering on the edge of trying this…consider this your sign.

Things you’re probably wondering about our beginner tap dance classes

  • No you don’t, you can just wear any pair of lace up shoes with a leather sole, or wear your runners.

  • We prefer tap shoes with a low heel, so either the men’s lace up style or the ladies strap and buckle, preferably in black. Our preferred brand is Capezio, but Bloch are also good.

  • The Capezio store in Elsternwick, or any Bloch Dance store should be able to help you out.

  • Definitely not, we don’t teach children, only adults

  • Once our classes start for the year they just keep going through until early December, we don’t stop for school holidays. The exception to this is our Beginners short courses which run for 6 weeks.

  • Yes please. Bookings ensure we know who is coming, in case there is a last minute change to the schedule for any reason. If you do happen to forget to book, you can still join in though, just check that the class is running before you turn up.

  • You can, but, because the classes work as a progressive course of learning we add to the repertoire and routines each week. You’ll have a better experience if you can attend on a regular basis, once a week is fine, twice a week is even better.

  • Booking a class is simple, head to the book a class page here and the system will take you through the booking process. You can either pay for single classes (or multiple single classes) or a 10 week pack (offering a 10% discount and make up classes if you need them), which ever suits you best.

  • Wear  comfortable exercise gear, preferably with layers…you’ll get pretty warm.

  • Just bring your tap shoes, a bottle of water and you might need a towel if you get sweaty.

  • If you're starting from scratch, adult tap classes are a fantastic choice—especially compared to other styles that can feel fast, intimidating or heavily performance based. Tap focuses on rhythm, coordination and musicality, not flexibility or tricks. You don’t need previous experience, fancy gear or a dance background. Tap gives you a full-body workout and improves brain function, Classes at The Melbourne Tap Studio are designed for adults who want to exercise, improve their fitness, have fun, and be challenged and inspired.

  • Start by finding a class created specifically for adults with no prior dance experience. It makes a huge difference to walk into a studio where everyone is there for the same reason, to try something new, feel good, and enjoy themselves. Adult tap is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to begin dancing. You’ll learn step-by-step, surrounded by a supportive and friendly community.

  • It’s never too late. Adult tap classes are the perfect way to return to movement or try it for the first time—whether you’re in your 20s or  your 70s. Tap is generally a mix of low-impact/medium impact exercise making it ideal for improving fitness and keeping your mind sharp. So whatever age you are, now is the perfect time to begin.

  • Tap dancing is a really easy and accessible way to start to learn to dance. Unlike other styles that often focus on complex choreography and high impact moves, tap lets you build a strong foundation in timing, rhythm and movement, step by step and it’s not too hard on the body. . It’s highly interactive, fun and perfect for adults looking to improve fitness, de-stress and find some ‘me-time’ in a supportive setting. You don’t need a dance background or even a great sense of coordination to begin. Just curiosity, a love of music, and a willingness to try. Tap is a better choice for many beginners because it's both simple to start and endlessly inspiring as you grow.
