A tap dance fitness includes:

  • A warm up

You’ll be lead through a thorough warm up to get your mind and body ready to go!

  • Technique

Your teacher will explain new tap steps, or go through steps you’re still working on, you’ll be taken through how to execute them, the technique to make the steps feel easier, you’ll learn tap terminology, rhythms and musicality. You’ll also have plenty of time to practice everything you’ve been working.

  • Across the floor

Across the floor work really gets the cardio going, you’ll be combining new steps you’ve been working on along with steps you’ve already mastered.

  • Routines

Where you start putting everything that you’ve learnt into practice. You’ll learn how to transition from one step to another, and you’ll end up with a complete routine. Such an achievement.

Meet Megan – principal teacher

I started tap dance as an adult beginner, which means I know exactly what it's like to walk into a dance class thinking, “what have I got myself into?”

But I also know what happens a few weeks in, when your feet start doing things you didn't think were possible, and you leave class feeling like you achieved something pretty special.

Not just moved. But learned something as well.

That's what tap dance does that a treadmill never will.

It makes you think, it makes you work, and it makes you want to come back.

I'll see you on the floor.

Frequently asked questions about our tap dance classes in Melbourne

  • Once our classes start for the year they just keep going through until early December, we don’t stop for school holidays. The exception to this is our Beginners short courses which run for 6 weeks.

  • Yes please. Bookings ensure we know who is coming, in case there is a last minute change to the schedule for any reason. If you do happen to forget to book, you can still join in though, just check that the class is running before you turn up.

  • You can, but, because the classes work as a progressive course of learning we add to the repertoire and routines each week. You’ll have a better experience if you can attend on a regular basis, once a week is fine, twice a week is even better.

  • Booking a class is simple, head to the book a class page here and the system will take you through the booking process. You can either pay for single classes (or multiple single classes) or a 10 week pack (offering a 10% discount and make up classes if you need them), which ever suits you best.

  • Wear  comfortable exercise gear, preferably with layers…you’ll get pretty warm.

  • Just bring your tap shoes, a bottle of water and you might need a towel if you get sweaty.

  • Yes, dance is an incredibly effective way to improve fitness—and it doesn’t feel like a chore. Dance workouts boost cardiovascular health, build strength, improve coordination, and help reduce stress. Research shows that dancing can be just as effective as other forms of moderate-to-intense exercise, especially when it’s consistent. The best part? You’re having fun, moving to music, and staying motivated because it feels good. And that’s what makes it sustainable.

  • You can—especially when dance becomes a regular part of your week. Like any physical activity, dance burns calories, builds muscle, and supports healthy metabolism. But more importantly, it helps create a routine you actually enjoy, which is key for long-term health and wellness. Many people find that when they’re having fun and feeling good in their bodies, they naturally make more positive choices across the board.

  • Even one class a week can have a big impact—on fitness, mood and energy levels. But if you’re looking to build strength, improve cardio health, or support weight management, aim for 2 to 3 sessions per week. Consistency matters more than intensity. What’s most important is that you find a class you love, with a welcoming, supportive vibe that keeps you coming back. When it’s fun, it’s easy to make it a habit.

  • The best dance is the one that gets you moving and makes you feel good. For many adults, styles like tap, jazz, and commercial are ideal—they’re expressive, energising and can be tailored to suit all fitness levels. Look for classes designed specifically for adults, with excellent teachers who know how to guide beginners and create an inclusive, no-judgement environment. Whether you want to groove, sweat, or just feel more connected to your body again, there’s a style that’s right for you.

  • Absolutely. Dance is for every age, every stage, and every body. Adults often make wonderful students because they’re self-motivated, curious, and open to learning. You don’t need a dance background—just a willingness to move and enjoy yourself. With the right class, you’ll feel encouraged, supported and inspired, even if you’ve never danced before. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about progress, confidence, connection—and finding joy in movement again.
